“Today in the Senate, I met with Senators Jon Kyl and Mark Kirk. The meeting is very useful because it shows that the alternative to Barack Obama is a collapse of all the programs of cooperation with Russia. Today, I had the impression that I was transported in a time machine back several decades, and in front of me sat two monsters of the Cold War, who looked at me not through pupils, but targeting sights.”—Russia’s ambassador to NATO is none too pleased with US conservatives. Wait till you see what one of those conservatives said in response. (via adamweinstein)
On my way back from dinner, a delivery guy started to sing “It’s not unusual to be loved by anyone” to me while snapping his fingers. I have no doubt in my mind that he tried to get my attention by doing the Carlton dance.
A professor at UCLA gave this illustration to his ethics’ class:
The father of a particular family has syphilis, a fatal disease that eats away at the mind and can be transmitted to children. The mother has tuberculosis which severely weakens the body and can also be transmitted to children.
This couple has had four children. One of them is blind. Another died at an early age. Still another is deaf. The last one has tuberculosis. The mother has just discovered that she is pregnant again.
He then asked his class whether they would suggest the mother abort this pregnancy.
Almost without exception, the medical students indicated that they would recommend abortion
The professor then stated “Congratulations, you’ve just killed Beethoven”
That’s fucking stupid. It’s impossible to tell the fetus’ potential before it’s born, just the same is it’s impossible to tell the potential of a newborn and most children. Let me give you a counter example:
A young woman was married at fourteen to a poor cobbler. Her first two children died shortly after birth, one from measles. She is now pregnant again. Keep in mind, they are still quite poor. Would medical students recommend abortion? I’m sure most of them would.
Congratulations! You just killed Josef Stalin.
Ugh, this “argument” from anti-choicers is so nonsensical.
Oh lord, not this stupid story again. it looks like some people still know nothing about Ludwig van Beethoven’s family. He was the second child, though he was the eldest in the sense that the older child died during infancy. Neither one of his siblings were born deaf or blind. Plus, there is no evidence that either parent had syphilis.
